Personal Strategies for Blogging

July 13, 2007

Blogging is new for me. I’ve read blogs for some time, but being on the composition side of things is my new venture. I must say that it’s a lot of fun. I like writing, I always have. Maybe I’ll get good at it some day. I have opinions, just like everyone else. I have experience, maybe not like everyone else. I have readers, well, hopefully one day that’ll be true. :)

So it’s been over a week since I’ve started this thing. I’ve published a few articles and have gotten some comments. I’m optimistic. So here’s some strategies I’ve put together, hopefully a real blogger will come by and share some blogging strategies.

  • Just write. Whenever I’m at the computer with the purpose of blogging I write. Big, small. Important, unimportant. Interesting, uninteresting. I keep writing because sometimes it’s the things that I’ll never publish that inspire that great idea. Write for the sake of it and the good nuggets will appear.
  • Save drafts. I write lots of drafts, and I save them. They’re my go to for when I need an idea to write about and publish. I am constantly updating drafts as well. I like being able to write something out, save it, think about it, and then add to it. It’s an iterative process.
  • Mobile notes. I have ideas that hit me all the time. Sometimes I’m walking the dog, sometimes I’m talking tech with another technophile. When an idea strikes I email it to myself via my mobile. My memory stinks and having a list of topics I’ve though of throughout the day is invaluable.
  • Be smart. Try and be smart about what you write. If you have an opinion, topic, view, or experience that is unique or that you are unaware of getting much attention in the public domain, write about it. Contribute to the good information and try and keep clutter to a minimum.
  • Be personal. This is a balance with “Be Smart.” Blogs have the unique opportunity for an individual to personally connect with readers. I try and write worth while articles and postings but try to mix in some on topic personal touches. I think it’s important to know a little bit about the guy who is spouting off. Hopefully I succeed. And remember, you can always get in touch with me!

So that’s the limited extent of my advice. If you have some personal blogging advice, please share it! I know I want to learn more!

As a big side note, I’ve also setup a link blog of pictures and sites I run across or are forwarded to me. Subscribe to it, there’s some good stuff in there.
